In Mark 8:2, Jesus says, “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days, and have nothing to eat”. Although the word ‘compassion’ is use in the English text, the actual word used in Greek has a much more sorrowful meaning. The Greek word used in verse is ‘splagchnizomai’, which means ‘gut-wrenching’ or the ‘twisting of the intestines’. This translation provides a deeper sense of the anguish Jesus feels for the suffering of the hungry and the poor. Reminiscing on the life of St. Vincent Ferrer. God used Vincent’s weakness of temptation as a way to touch the hearts of wayward souls. It is important that we ask God to feel what He feels for the needy. The mind of man can easily be overwhelmed by the all the suffering in the world; this can lead to apathy and cynicism. However, when we imitate Jesus, we become energized to act with compassion and mercy towards those who are suffering.
